Solution to: Save your friend

Jack: The crime happened at 3.00 PM and by considering the location of the window and the position of the sun, the sun rays would do a magic.

The sunrays from the window perfectly falls on the prism , by a known phenomenon called dispersion, the color of the light gets scattered. By calculation, I found a person standing outside the window can see red light falling on that screen.

So, when Kayla saw a person with pink shirt in the crime since from the window, the true color of the shirt must have been blue!

red+blue= magenta which looks like pink

Your primary statement of murderer being in pink is broken.
So, though we don't know who the murderer is, we know Steve is innocent!

Case 3: Save your friend

You're inspector Jack, you have 12 years experience as a detective, 4 years experience as an inspector.

After all the hard cases, you decide to go on a vacation to near by island. The following things happened when you are not in town:

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

A young scientist, Steve( a women hater) always wears pink shirt (as pink is his favorite color).

His job is to conducted experiments and display the results in scientific exhibitions.

One day he finds a new way to clone himself and he decides to show that in science exhibition.
But since cloning himself is illegal, he clones a carrot and decides to display it. mean while he dresses his (self human) clone in his favorite pink and hides in in cupboard.

At the day of exhibition:
He dresses well and brings his instruments along with him. After fixing all the setup, he stands next to his setup.

He finds out that no one is interested in his work but next to his room, all the crowd gathers and are amazed by seeing something.
In curiosity, he too walks towards them and he sees a painting displayed there. He doesn't know what is so special about the painting. He looks up and he sees the person who drew the painting. He is amazed now! . The owner of the painting is a beautiful girl, with curly hair and looks so attractive that he falls in love with her in his first sight. She looks at him, he looks down and blushes. She smiles at his innocence. She asks him "My name is Rose, do you like the painting?" . He looks somewhere else and replies "It is good, i cant take my eye of it". She laughs at him.

1 year later
Rose somehow falls in love with Steve a few weeks after their first meet.
one day, Rose enters his lab.
Rose: Its only 7.00 AM now Steve. You started your lab work? you never give importance to me? you are always busy with your lab works?
Steve: Science is my breath, you came next to science in priority list. Science is first.
Steve: I'm not important to you, because you hang out with guys daily, even you go in bikes with them. so dont expect me to give importance to you.
Rose: Fine Steve!
Rose pushes all his costly setup and breaks his instruments, people who hear this, see this through the window of the lab.
Steve: I'm going to kill you now or later, get out of here!

(24 hours later) DAY 1:
The cops find Rose's dead body in the highway.

Constable1: I have a doubt in this death. why would a girl tie her hand and suicide?
Constable2: Yes, I too suspect that.
Constable1: Lets find out.

DAY 2:
The cops intelligently investigate and find out that the girl is Rose. They also find an eye-witness of the crime, Kayla.

Kayla: Sir I saw from the window of the lab at 3.00PM. A young guy wearing pink shirt, took a knife and stabbed this girl to death.
Constable1: Was that this guy?

Kayla: I don't know sir. I only saw his shirt.
Constable2: People around his house say "He screamed at her at 7.10 AM that he would kill her soon"
Constable1: All the evidences say he killed her. We have to arrest him..

When you return home after your vacation, you are hearing the whole story(Unfortunately Steve is your close friend). Now it is upto you to give a logical explanation to save your friend.

Solution to: Virtual and vivid ambiguity

Jack: As you can see the picture of the victim in crime scene :

And the picture of the girl in stranger's photo:

If you see it carefully, you can see the mole(birthmark) on the victims face is on the left in crime scene and mole is on the right in stranger's photo.
As I entered the house I saw mirror pieces on the floor of the house:

As the small details tell the truth, clearly the stranger must have taken the photo in the mirror(only possible way of changing mole position on the face). This means that that crime must have taken place at 9.00 instead of 3.00 in the noon. According to forensic report, it must have taken place at night 9.00 and the killer must be a right hand person.

So the killer is HUSBAND! arrest him!

Case 2: Virtual and vivid ambiguity

You're inspector Jack, you have 12 years experience as a detective, 4 years experience as an inspector.

You get a disturbing call from a guy who cries out, that his wife was found brutally stabbed to death, when he returned from his office. You and your team go the crime spot to find out what happened..

DAY 1:
As you enter the house where the crime has taken place you find shattered mirror pieces, a knife, blood shed all over the place.
Photos taken at crime spot:

You: Hello sir, are you the one who called me?
Jim: yes sir, my name is Jim, yesterday morning I said good-bye to her and left to office at 8.00 AM. She had been murdered by someone when I returned from office at 5.00 PM.
You: Do you suspect anyone?
Jim: Yes, my wife had an ex boyfriend, Dustin. He used to torture her over the phone. Last week even he came home with the photos my wife took with him when they were lovers and he demanded money from us. I told him to get lost.
You: (Smiles)Now I know where to go.
You see your assistant running towards
Assistant:Sir, there is one more body in the garden. The body is a stranger and a film-role type camera is along with him.
You: Send both the bodies to forensic lab and give the film role for development.

1 hour later, at Dustin(boy friend)'s house
You: Hello Dust bin!
Dustin: It's D-u-s-t-i-n !
You: Yes Dustin, did you know Jessica, you ex has been murdered yesterday. I suspect you!
Dustin: Oh no. I didn't know that. Do you have proof? I didn't kill her.
You: Sounds fair! I'll be back.

DAY 2:
Assistant: Sir, The murder must have been done after 2.30 PM according forensic lab.
The photo has been developed:

You: So this picture was taken by the stranger when the murderer killed Jessica and the murderer killed the stranger too for leaving no loose ends.
Assistant: Then why did he leave the camera behind?
You: He must have not know that the stranger had a camera. The murderer must have been in a hurry to escape.
You: Ask Jim and Dustin to come here for an enquiry.

2 hours later
You: Jim, I am going to ask you few questions.
Jim: Yes sir.
You: Is there proof that you were in office from 8.00 AM to 5.00 PM on the day murder took place?
Jim: yes, my office log book, CCTV in office.
You: you may go.

You: Dustin, Where were you at 3.00 PM on the day of murder?
Dustin: I was sleeping in my house.
You: you may go.

DAY 3
You: I want you to take photos of Jim and Dustin without their knowledge, when they eat or drink something.
Assistant: yes sir!

2 hours later
Assistant: Here are the photos, sir:

You: Small details are more important. Comparing all the photos we have so far, I found the criminal!

One among the two is the criminal, using your observation skill, find the criminal.

Solution to: Case 1: Every murderer makes a mistake

You:(Aggressively) Arrest the constable!
Assistants: Sir, but how did you find out?

You: Two reasons:

We all know that these 4 suspects were found in the locality, the one detail that we failed to notice is that even the constable was in rounds in the locality. So he should also be included in the suspects list.
The constable said "A knife with bloodstain placed inside a novel between pages thirty-five and thirty-six, the finger print on the knife matches with that of suspect B.". It is practically impossible for a person to place anything between pages 35 and 36. Take a book and try it for yourself.

Thou there are 75% probability of cook being the murderer, 50% probability of other 3 suspects being the murderer, all these become invalid if constable has made up stories in giving primary data.

The the only person who is lying here is constable. It is not usual for a trained constable to make up stories, so by which I concluded constable to be the murderer with 100% probability.

Constable: Yes, I murdered her. I killed her because her father killed my innocent father when I was young. Her father was a rowdy in our area. This was the right time for me to take revenge on their family. I thought you will never find me. Detective Jack, you did it.

Case 1: Every murderer makes a mistake

A murder has occurred in a small town near by a police station at 3.00 AM. The police got a mysterious call at 3.15 AM stating that a murder has occurred.

You are inspector Jack, who attended the phone call and as you are held up investigating another crime, you send a constable(who is in rounds in a place nearby the town) to the spot to collect the necessary details about the crime. After finishing your work, you reach the crime spot at 10.00 AM. The following details are available to you:

Constable: Sir (Salutes), as soon as I came here at 3.30AM, there were 4 people roaming near the house where crime has taken place. They looked suspicious to me. Inside the house, the following were found:

Opened window which has a size big enough to let a man pass through it from outside.
An used bandage on the table which must have fallen from the murderer's body and suspect A has a pale skin in elbow signifying a bandage has been recently removed from his elbow.
A broken chair at the corner of the room having few drops of blood at the edge. The murdered must have attacked the victim with this chair.
A left leg shoe under the bed. The right pair of this shoe was found in suspect C's house.
A knife with bloodstain placed inside a novel between pages thirty-five and thirty-six, the finger print on the knife matches with that of suspect B.
Suspect D is a woman, she has no reason to be here at the time I arrived. When I inquired the neighbors, they said that she is her sister, i.e., the dad's second wife's daughter. And both fight each other for property.

You: The blood in knife and chair belong to the victim?

Constable: Yes sir.

Suspect A: Sir, I am a farmer. I live in the next street. I didn't get sleep so I decided to go for a walk. On my way, this constable started asking me questions. I know nothing about what has happened inside. He asked me about this bandage. This is because I fell down last week and I removed bandage yesterday night itself.

Suspect B: Sir, I am cook in this house, I left the house at 8.00 PM last night, at 3.15 AM when I returned for cooking, you constable started enquiring me.

Suspect C: Good morning sir(weeps), I am uncle of sonia who has been murdered by someone. Please catch the criminal soon. He/She will be killed by my own hands sir!!

Suspect D: I have no reason to murder her. If you think I murdered her, then arrest me, I lost everything in my life. She was arguing with me about the property but I always had respect for her.

Based on the information provided, you have to arrest the criminal. There is only one criminal and using your knowledge and 12 years experience as a detective and 4 years experience as an inspector, find the criminal.
